This is the symbol Paulo has sent to us. In any way, if you find the design poor, you can recreate the same butterfly with an asterisk (star) on each wing. In any way, I think it is easier to print Paulo's design as it is. Do as you please, but let me know what you finally decide to do.
21 de diciembre de Arash a Patricia
The symbol is very poorly designed. Should we include it exactly as it is, or we may recreate it graphically?

Do you have any positive response from the newspapers? Where and when it will going to be published? I count on you to secure the publication of the New Year tale.
Thank you very much.

Thanks for confirming receipt (of the tale and of the contracts). However, can you please confirm that the tale
is going to be published, in which media and when?

Thank you for the page of O Zahir in Persian. Fantastic.
I just wanted to comment that you have not translated the copyrights, the biography, editions, etc. If you have a look at the last page of the presentation, you will see the sections I am talking about. We think it would also be interesting to have them also in Persian. The copyrights for the photos and music are obligatory.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Thank you very much in advance,

I believe there is a misunderstanding regarding the contract. The rights
granted to All Prints are exclusively in trade book format. The author
reserves all the other rights in the work. Please see the clause below.
1. The Proprietor hereby grants to the Publisher the exclusive right to
translate, print, publish and sell the Work in the Arabic language in
Trade Book form exclusively for the territory of the world (The
'Territory'), under its own imprint, subject to all terms and conditions
of this Agreement.
Trade book format refers to the regularly published edition. It can be a
softcover book which is generally large in size and made of better quality
materials than a Mass-Market Paperback. Trade books are distributed through
the book trade - meaning bookstores - as opposed to, for example,
mass-market paperbacks, which are often sold at magazine racks, newsstands,
and supermarkets as well and other mass markets. Mass market books are
smaller (and cheaper) than trade books. Therefore, we are in full and legal
compliance with the terms of the contract, according to the standard
procedures world wide. There is no legal need for us to demand permission of
All Prints to proceed with the sales of paperback and mass market editions.
The editions by All Prints are in trade book format and have been sold at a
price of 10$USD until now.
Pocket/mass market agreements are always under separate agreement. We sell
separate formats not only for you but for all languages, including Spanish,
French etc. This is an standard procedure in all professional contracts
between publishing houses and Sant Jordi Asociados.
In any case Rida, All Prints have had the first option on the pocket rights,
I have asked you several occasions whether you wanted to publish in pocket
format and this year, you informed me on your email from Rana Saifi of March
25th that you were not interested in publishing the books in a pocket
format. Please see your email below.
"As to the cheaper edition idea, well, i guess that further to Sales and
Market survey, people are buying the original edition so far, no matter how
much it costs. Having the cheaper one now is on hold."
As you know, it is our outmost concern to improve the diffusion of Coelho's
books throughout the Arabic world. We couldn't rely only on your efforts
with the trade edition. As a matter of fact, we have worked hard to find a
paperback Publisher to have the books available in Arabic in a mass market
edition. You also know Coelho's books were pirated in some countries. In our
opinion, and in the opinion of most editors, this is due to the fact that
the public could not afford a book that costs € 10. For your information,
the books in Morroco will be sold at € 3 at the most.
In any way, I don't see you should worry about the difusion of the trade
edition. The mass market edition will help raise awareness and attention to
the author and his work, consolidating the presence of the books and
improving sales. You can just see Morocco, Sirpus has made a great work
there and the new sucessful situation of Paulo in Morocco will probably
travel to the other Arabic markets. Ana Zendera, the representative of
Sirpus, went to Marroco and had a meeting, together with Paulo Coelho, with
the Minister of Culture. Paulo is now invited (all expenses paid, including
the air tickets business class) for the Festival of Casablanca.
It is our common task to promote the success in Morocco to other Arabic
countries and this will help you to sell more books. Also, Sirpus has worked
very hard at the FBF presenting Paulo's books to several authorites in all
the countries presented and the news of the pocket edition of Coelho's books
has been published in many
countries. I had planned to introduce you both in Frankfurt, however, in the
end, remember you didn't attend our meeting at the Fair.
We signed an agreement with Sirpus, therefore their contract is valid and
they are proceeding with our full support and knowledge. During the
Frankfurt Book Fair they took all the necessary contacts, and nearly all
newspapers in Arabic language published the press information released then.
Our experience shows that the more available the product is, the more you
consolidade it as a total brand. We count that you will keep your trade
edition available and well distributed throughout the Arabic world.
If you prefer, let's discuss it further over the phone.

Thank you for the below message. I have several comments about it:
1- I was quite surprised to know that, as you mentioned "the pocket rights of Coelho's books were sold to Sirpus, a publishing house located in Spain, who is coordinating a co-edition of the mass market edition in Arabic language with local publishers in the Arab countries. The first title to be published is The Alchemist in January 2005. In Morocco the local publisher is Le Fennec." I didn't expect this at all. All Prints is the exclusive publisher of Coelho's books in the Arab World (we'll get back to this below). I have never heard of Sirpus, nor of selling them the pocket rights of Coelho's books. It would have been wise to notify me, in written, of such a critical issue rather than accidentally hearing or reading anything about it from a third party.
2- All Prints is not concerned with granting pocket rights to other publishers to bring in a mass market edition, particularly in Arabic! All Prints is publishing a mass market edition and you fully know that we are negotiating to reduce our edition price to $ 6, since the $10 pricing for a mass market edition is becoming less affordable; and to stop Coelho's books' piracy as well.
3- As i said, and as per the Agreement dated July 10, 2001, signed between your representative Mrs. Suzan Nassif and the All Prints, All Prints remains the EXCLUSIVE publisher of the Arabic edition of Coelho's books in the Arab World. Sant Jordi has granted All Prints these exclusive rights in the said Agreement as per clause 1, i quote, " 1. The Proprietor (Paulo Coelho) hereby grants to the Publisher (All Prints) the exclusive right to translate, print, publish and sell the Work in Arabic language in Trade Book form, exclusively for the territory of the World (The Territory- Arab Countries) , under its own imprint, subject to all terms and conditions of this Agreement". End of quote.
As far as the TRADE BOOK form is concerned, we are actually publishing a trade edition which is the synonymous to the mass market edition priced at $ 10.
Given the aforementioned clause and under the exclusive rights All Prints has, Sant Jordi has no legal right to grant and sell copyrights for publishing Coelho's Arabic edition to any Arab publishing house whatsoever. All Prints exclusiveness of rights remains valid until July 2006 as per our original Agreement which covers all of the titles by Coelho. Therefore, Sirpus would be illegaly dealing with other local publishers in the Arab World, unless it gets a written notification and authorization from All Prints to take such an action.
I thereby urge Sant Jordi and Sirpus to stop publishing any of Coelho's books in Arabic, under any form. Otherwise, All Prints will sadly have to take the necessary legal action to settle any conflict which might arise out of this matter. All Prints would rather unravel this matter with you amiably.
All Prints and Sant Jordi have so far special and decent business ties that I wish to keep them going instead of undermining them. Kindly consider this seriously. Your understanding is much appreciated.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thank you for your email.
As you may probably have read, the pocket rights of Coelho's books were sold to Sirpus, a publishing house located in Spain, who is coordinating a co-edition of the mass market edition in Arabic language with local publishers in the Arab countries. The first title to be published is The Alchemist in January 2005. In Morocco the local publisher is Le Fennec.
As per the Casablanca Book Fair, Sirpus is coordinating Coelho's participation with the fair, they have organized the meeting/dinner between Paulo and the Minister of Culture of Morocco and all details are going through them, so you don't need to contact the Fair. As soon as we know the activities planned, we will inform you.
As per the price of the trade edition, if you are able to reduce it to 6 Euros, that is fine, but please bear in mind that All Prints cannot publish the books other than in the trade format as you publish them at present.
We will receive the English translation of The Zahir in the next few days and we will be forwarding it to you immediately after receiving it. The French translation will be available at the end of January.
I take this opportunity to wish you a happy year end. Paulo and I are very glad that we are able to improve the position of his books in the Arabic world.

Kindly note that All Prints will be present at Casablanca Book Fair. We
suggest to have a book signing by Mr. Coelho there. All Prints will be
contacting the fair organizationl board to draw a collaboration plan for
potential activities during Coelho's stay in Morocco.
As to O Zahir, we will carry out the translation into Arabic once we get the
English or French copy. It takes up around 2 to 3 months for translation,
print and distribution of the book. We'll be having a launching campaign for
the book, and as you mentioned will start preparing for it soon. We'll
provide you with our plan details when it is ready.Suggestions for the
interviews on O Zahir will be passed onto you along with the plan.
We consider to reprice Coelho's books at around $ 6.

Thank you for your message to Patricia and congratulations on the book sales during the Fair of Biel. For your information, and for the first time, Paulo signed a copy of "Eleven Minutes" in Arabic, at the airport of Casablanca.
We would like to inform that the visit to Marrakech was excellent. We wanted to thank you for the books which we received on time. Thank you very much for your attention. Paulo could personally present a collection of his books to Prince Moulay Rachid, who he meet in several occasions privately, to the Princess and the Minister of Culture. We made excellent contacts. Paulo has been several times on TV and the Moroccan press, even in the cover.
Can you please confirm that you have been able to send copies of the books to Morocco? This is an excellent moment for them to be distributed in the bookstores.
Paulo was invited by the Minister of Culture to participate at the Casablanca Fair in February. We are checking how we can combine Paulo's agenda in order to confirm his attendance.
We unsderstand that February is not a good month in Lebanon. In March and April Paulo will be in Brazil for the launch of "O Zahir" and then we will go to Budapest where he will receive the Budapest Grand Prize, presented by Budapest's major. Can you please inform when All Prints is going to publish O Zahir and which dates you believe are good for the visit?
For this title, it would be very important to prepare a successful launch campaign. A good launch needs a lot of preparation and a good timing.
For instance, if you are planning to place posters in the streets or means of transport, the spaces need to be reserved with months in advance; the same goes for placing special deals with bookstore chains, assuring the distribution, etc. In the light of this, I hope it is possible for you to send us a marketing and advert plan during December.
Please include your ideas for promotion and PR, with an agenda of when the actions will be carried out, dates and frequency of the advert campaign, etc. Please include which media (and circulation) you have in mind for the publication of the booklet.
Bear in mind that Paulo is not considering granting many interviews for the launch of O Zahir. We want to avoid having Paulo answering the same questions once again, however, if you have any special ideas, please send them to us and we will consider them with him.
Finally, I think it is excellent that you lower the price of the trade editions to 10 USD. This is a much more competitive price, and the issue of the price is very important for Paulo's readership.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon,
With my best regards,

Thanks for your congrats. I myself would like to congrat you for the rousing
success Mr. Coelho has in Morocco and worldwide. All Prints will be present
at Morocco's Fair in February. So, we've already processed printing heaps of
copies of Coelho's books to be shipped to the Fair. Major distribution will
take place as a result.
As to the below issues mentioned in your email. I'll be answering them as
soon as i discuss them with Mr. Rida.

Thanks for the email. That's lovely on Mr. Coelho's part....
I'll be contacting leading newspapers and magazines in Lebanon to have the
tale published after putting it into Arabic.
I'll get back to you shortly.

Thanks for the reminders.
I'd like to note first that we had good sales for Coelho's books during the
10-day Book Fair at Biel. The Alchemist ranked first at around 150 copies,
Elven Minutes around 100 and 40 copies for each of the other titles.
As far as Maktub is concerned, All Prints is not considering to publish it
As to Mr. Coelho's visit, you've already suggested to arrange it for the 1st
week of February, but it's not a good promotional time. Februray in Lebanon
is windy and much snow falls down, so people tend to stay in. I suggest
first week of April or last week of March, i.e before Easter holidays.
Usually, we have some cultural events during this time of the year, besides
it's sunnier and there's a potential to have lots of people coming to the
book signing and so.
I advise that you confirm the visit before we can do any move. We're afraid
to set everything in place and then something comes up with Mr. Coelho, and
he cancels his visit as happened last year, you know, last year All Prints
had huge preparations with Lebanon's biggest uiversities and other cultural
organizers to have the best planning for the visit. So we need to be quite
sure this year of Coelho's exact date of arrival and a confirmation of his
stay, in order to keep credibility and not to disppoint Coelho's fans.
Please don't take this personally at all, we're all excited to see Paolo
again and to have him staying in Lebanon. Once we get your confirmation,
we'll exert all efforts and do our best to have the best-planned visit for
Coelho in the Middle East, we'll try to make of it a tremendous successful
cultural event. We will be coordinating as well with Mr. Mouradian
concerning Syria's part of the visit.
Please note that All Prints is willing to pay Coelho's accomodation and
expenses during his stay (ticket not inclusive). Kindly accept my apology
for being unable to pay the expenses of an escort.
On the other hand, and due to the much hacking Coelho's books are going
through, we are considering, after mutual consentment with you, to reduce
the price of our editions of Coelho's books. Arab readers see that $10 per
book are much since they can get a hackered copy for a lesser price.
I'll be waiting for the O Zahor translation, to carry out the translation
13 de diciembre de Patricia a Rana
I hope everything is fine.
I am contacting you as I am waiting to receive some news from you regarding several matters.
On one hand, I look forward to your news regarding the publication of Maktub. If I don't hear anything from you within this week, I will understand that you are not interested.
On the other hand, I would be grateful to receive an update about the preparations on Paulo's visit to Beirut and Syria. It would be very convenient to arrange events in both places: book signings, meetings at universities, interviews, etc... with Paulo's readers.
Visits need to be organized with enough time in order to assure their success. Besides that, we will have to apply for visas, both for Paulo and for an escort from Sant Jordi. I also need to know which charges you are going to pay in order to coordinate it with Mr. Mouradian.
Please let me know as soon as possible.
Awaiting your news,
Thank you in advance and best regards,

in order to rush things up I did this very rough and basic ( not using the
poetic Hebrew it is actually written in) translation of the text that's on
"Light Warriors" find their way in life out of pure humanism, including
courage but also weakness and always a lot of hope.
If we will follow the light of this life guide Coelho suggests to his
enthusiastic readers, we will know to fulfill the ability to be a Warrior
of Light which is within us all.
"From the point of view of the warrior of light" says coelho," there is no
impossible love. He is not afraid of indifference or rejection. he knows
that behind the mask of ice that people wear is a heart of fire.. that's why
the warrior of light takes more risks then others. He seeks the love of
others all the time. even though he might be rejected and defeated.. he does
not scare while he seeks what he needs, without love he is useless"
Is it possible we lost the courage to look within? can we know today in the

and secret longings?
In this book gathers coelho segments which round up to the life journey of a

and the paragraph that returns in all our Coelho books:
The books by Paulo Coelho were translated to 56 Languages and sold in over

RAYO, EDICIÓN ESPAÑOLA EN USA

Thank you very much for your message.
Both Paulo and I are very glad with Rayo's marketing plan for The Zahir Spanish edition in the US. We hope this launch will help raise Paulo's profile in the US among the Latino community as well as the sales. Please keep us informed about the deals with the major chains and independent booksellers, also for indoor and outdoor decorations.
Regarding the price, I would like to recommend a reasonable and competitive price, as the issue of the price is very important for Paulo's readership.
Further to this, I would like to share some ideas with you:
Can you please send me your suggestion for the slogan? The slogan chosen by Diogenes is "Every journey is a love story..."
Genesis of O Zahir:
Paulo is going to write an article titled "The Genesis of O Zahir". Most probably, it will be ready in January, so that you have enough time to secure its publication in a leading national newspaper.
Paulo is not considering granting many interviews for the launch of O Zahir. We want to avoid having Paulo answering the same questions once again. For this reason, the author will make a general interview about this title to be distributed in all countries, as we had for Eleven Minutes, and you may arrange its publication in a bookstore catalogue or in a media.
There might be a possibility for Paulo to grant one exclusive interview for Univision in Paris or St.Martin (South of France) to be broadcast at the moment of the launch.
One of the points we would like all the publishers to carry out is the publication of a free teaser booklet to be distributed with a leading nationwide magazine with the first 20 pages until the paragraph "Los royalties de mis canciones... vivir confortablemente sin tener que trabajar y con tiempo suficiente para todo, incluso.... para escribir un libro", with the text: "Lanzamiento el 27 mayo 2005" in the cover or in the last page. Our idea is to use the cover of O Zahir in the booklet. It would be great that you could arrange this. If the magazine feels the insert should contain more pages, it is fine for us.
It is necessary to secure a strong advertising campaign to raise awareness for the book at the moment of publication. Most of the campaigns presented to us so far work in the same direction of getting total coverage of the market at the moment of publication. At your earliest convenience, please send us the calendar of the adverts and media activities.
We think you could talk to Julia about the on-line promotion for the English edition and see which actions you can carry out for the Spanish edition.
Apart from the promotion in the website, we think it would be great to buy an alert to subscribers of news/cultural newsletters of one of the major platforms. For instance, Terra online which is aimed at the Spanish-speaking community has a list of more than 500,000 subscribers in Spain. We have heard this kind of promotion is very effective because it reaches the audience that is interested in books and the percentage of people reading the newsletter is really high.
There is one idea I would like you to consider that may work for O Zahir. You could send a copy of the book to some Spanish personalities besides the media before publication in order to get quotes. Can you please let me know your thoughts?
Regarding Puerto Rico, I would like to remind you that HarperCollins do not have the rights to distribute O Zahir in Spanish there.
That is all for the time being. I look forward to hearing your comments.
Thank you and best regards,

Thank you for your message. As Patricia has already informed, the publication date will be May 27. It would be great if the Spanish editions were published on that date, as in this way, we could have a simultaneous launch in the American continents. We can also use this information in our communications to the press, etc.
The editions are in trade paperback with flaps, quality edition or hardcover.
We are going to review the marketing plan with Paulo and will send you our comments soon.

I'm thrilled we're going to publish El Zahir next year. I have a couple of questions regarding when to publish our Spanish edition, as I want our edition to be out in the market when either Spain and/or Latin America publishes their edition.
When will Spain publish, and when will Latin America publish? Any information you could provide would be extremely helpful for us.
Also, in what format is each publishing (hardcover vs. paperback)?
Hope all is well with you.

I hope this email finds you well.
We have some wonderful! We've just received confirmation that the two largest running Spanish-language newspapers in the United States (El Diario in New York and La Raza in Chicago) have agreed to run the piece just in time for Christmas. We are still waiting to hear back from La Opinion in Los Angeles, but since all three newspapers are owned by the same media corporation, the likelihood of the piece running in Los Angeles is very, very high.
I'll let you know as soon as I do what the exact run dates for each newspaper will be.
One question, I assume you would like us to credit Paulo as the author of The Alchemist and the upcoming O Zahir. Please confirm.
One more area we are trying to place the piece is on-line. Univision.com is the most trafficked Spanish-language website in the United States and we would like to have the piece prominently placed there if at all possible. We have had marvelous luck and exposure here in the past. Would you folks be willing to offer the piece on-line as well?
All the best,

I am writing regarding the letter we have received about "Manual del
Guerrero de la Luz", where we are offered the opportunity to buy copies from the stock. As far as I understand, you have 3,666 copies of the hardcover edition. Except for our 25 copies, we have 3,641 copies.
I would like to propose to make an authorization for a special sale for these copies to be distributed in Puerto Rico in a controlled way. It is a very beautiful book and it is a pity it has to be destroyed. I would be grateful if you would inform which price you would charge in the market. My proposal for the royalties will be 1$USD per sold copy.
I look forward to your confirmation and the proposal for the retail price.
